The Kindness Song

GlennColtonAuthor, songwriter, and musical entertainer Glenn Colton, has been teaching through performance for the better part of his life.  He is best known for the more than 5000 high energy children and family concerts he has put on throughout North America.  The Random Acts of Kindness song is only one of the many songs highlighted in his “Raise Our Voices For Healthy Choices” show that he would go on tour with to support character education programs in schools and communities.  In this show, character is defined as: knowing what is right, caring about what is right, and doing what is right.  His objective is to encourage healthy choices with kids and to help them discover how the choices we make today, affect our tomorrow.  Glenn is now retired and not longer goes on tour.  You can still enjoy his songs and stories as he has many different books, CD’s and DVD’s celebrating his work.  You can find them all on his website at: www.glenncolton.com

We wanted to share the Random Acts of Kindness song and its lyrics with you today as we know children of all ages can sometimes relate so much better and remember the message that is to be taught, through the power of song.  Chase loved music and we know that he would have been singing and strumming his guitar right along with Glenn.

Random Acts Of Kindness

written by Glenn Colton

A random act of kindness, is perfect and its free.  It happens when we help a friend unexpectedly.

You were in a hurry, when you saw me all alone.  You told me not to worry, I’ll help you find your way home

A random act of kindness is perfect and its free.  It happens when we help a friend unexpectedly.

You wrote me a letter, when I was feeling blue.  It sure made me feel better, to know that I’ve a good friend like you

A random act of kindness, is perfect and its free.  It happens when we help a friend unexpectedly.

Remember when you said to me, that I was your best friend.  The words you spoke so beautifuly, helped me to smile once again … once again

A random act of kindness, is perfect and its free.  It happens when we help a friend unexpectedly.

A random act of kindness, is perfect and its free.  It happens when we help a friend unexpectedly.

Kindness

Before you know what kindness really is
you must lose things,
feel the future dissolve in a moment
like salt in a weakened broth.
What you held in your hand,
what you counted and carefully saved,
all this must go so you know
how desolate the landscape can be
between the regions of kindness.
How you ride and ride
thinking the bus will never stop,
the passengers eating maize and chicken
will stare out the window forever.
Before you learn the tender gravity of kindness,
you must travel where the Indian in a white poncho
lies dead by the side of the road.
You must see how this could be you,
how he too was someone
who journeyed through the night with plans
and the simple breath that kept him alive.
Before you know kindness as the deepest thing inside,
you must know sorrow as the other deepest thing.
You must wake up with sorrow.
You must speak to it till your voice
catches the thread of all sorrows
and you see the size of the cloth.
Then it is only kindness that makes sense anymore,
only kindness that ties your shoes
and sends you out into the day to mail letters and purchase bread,
only kindness that raises its head
from the crowd of the world to say
it is I you have been looking for,
and then goes with you everywhere
like a shadow or a friend.
